Today in Maths we conducted an investigation on Time. In groups we made our very own sand timers that had to run for 1 minute. We had to make different adjustments to get the time correct or as close  as possible. Then we recorded our findings. Maths Investigation- The Sands of Time

Science Week

Science Week
Science Tabloids
Last week was science week, on Wednesday the 15th August; Wattle Grove Primary School held a Science Tabloid. In each tabloid we learnt about and performed science experiments.

My group did a Leak Proof Bag Experiment with our music teacher Mr Honey. We poked a pencil through a bag filled with water. All of us expected it to trickle out but it didn’t because the bag is made of polymers which are tough and flexible. So, when we poked the bag the molecules hugged the pencil making the bag not leak.

Our second rotation was with Ms Agar where we did DIY Red Cabbage Chemistry. We used a dropper to get a maximum of 5 drops of each ingredient in the 5 tubes. In each tube we added vinegar, dish washing liquid, lemonade, baking soda and red cabbage juice. We then put pH strips in the tubes to test the pH level of each liquid.

Last but not least, we made a Lava Lamp with Miss Zaffino. For this experiment we used oil, food colouring, water and Alka Seltzer tablets to make it fizz. First, we got a glass filled with water and oil. Then added a few drops of food colouring followed by the Alka Seltzer which caused bubbling.
In summary, we learned some new facts about science while having fun.

Book Week Parade

Today we celebrated Book Week by participating in a parade with our Buddy Class. We had a lot of different characters from Willy Wonka to Little Red Riding Hood to Thing 1, 2 & 3 to Harry Potter. It was a lot of fun.

Science Week

On 15/08/2018 after lunch the entire school went to different areas of the school ground so we could discover science.

ELECTRICITY: The first thing we did was based on electricity. We had wires and batteries and light globes. We had to make power reach those globes to light them up creating a working electrical circuit. After that we made 1 battery pack reach 2 globes, then 1 battery pack reach 3 globes. We had success and were able to light the globes up after experimenting with the circuit.

MARSHMALLOW TOWER: We made a marshmallow tower using toothpicks and marshmallows. It was pretty fun (and messy). We had to plan out our tower on whiteboards and then create it. It had to stand for 30 seconds without toppling over. Sanj, George and this other student built a really tall tower made by toothpicks and marshmallows.

PLASTICINE BOATS: We had to make a plasticine boat that could float and hold wooden blocks. Sanj made a boat and it was hard to make it float, but Prithul’s one held 19 blocks.

Choir

Massed Choir Rehearsal
On Tuesday, Room 8 members of the senior choir travelled to Churchlands Performing Arts theatre for a rehearsal of the Massed Choir songs.  The theatre was filled with hundreds of children from schools that are also participating in the Massed Choir event at the end of Term 3. It was exciting to rehearse altogether and the singing was amazing.

Book Week Dress Up Parade

Dear Parents/Carers,

In order to celebrate Book Week, we are planning to hold a Dress Up Parade on Friday 24th August. Students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. The theme for Book Week 2018 is Find Your Treasure.

Our parade time is 8.50am – 9.30am

If possible, students could also wear a sign to show what character they are and what book they are from, if not immediately obvious.

Thank you

Miss Dowling
